Why domain rating matters

Domain rating is a score, usually from 0 to 100, that estimates how strong a website's backlink profile is. It is a useful yardstick for a young startup, as long as you understand what it is and what it is not.

What domain rating actually is

Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' score and Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's. Both estimate how strong a site's backlinks are: how many different websites link to you, and how strong those sites are themselves. New domains start near zero and climb as trustworthy sites link to them.

Important: these are third-party metrics. Google does not use DR or DA as a ranking factor. They are estimates that correlate with how well a site's links look, not a direct line to rankings.

Why it still matters for a startup

How to raise it honestly

  1. Get listed in real directories. Post your startup here, then on other free startup boards. Note that many listing links are nofollow, so they pass less link authority, but they still create discovery and mentions.
  2. Earn links from relevant sites. Guest posts, podcasts, interviews and useful tools people cite.
  3. Create something worth linking to. Original data, a free tool, or a clear guide gets referenced without you asking.
  4. Link between your own projects sensibly. Each real, distinct domain counts once, so ten links from one site are worth far less than links from ten different ones.
  5. Avoid bought links and link farms. They can hurt you and any short-term score gain disappears.

What to expect

A new domain often sits between 0 and 20 for its first months, and moves as real links accumulate. Track the trend rather than the daily number, and treat it as a progress gauge, not a goal by itself. See why SEO matters for the wider picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is domain rating a Google ranking factor?

No. Google has said it does not use third-party scores like DR or DA. They are estimates from tools such as Ahrefs and Moz that track your backlink profile, which does influence rankings indirectly.

What is a good domain rating for a new startup?

There is no universal number. Brand new sites usually start near 0 and reach the teens or twenties over months. Compare against the sites you actually compete with, not against big brands.

What is the difference between DR and DA?

DR comes from Ahrefs and DA from Moz. They use different data and formulas, so the same site gets different numbers. Pick one tool and track your own trend in it.
